M SUSTAIN

While there are countless names in the fashion industry making a shift to adhere to sustainability and fair trade principles, and invest more in communities, we feel as though everything – and nothing – has changed. For this reason, before the launch of Merandi, the team had gone extra miles to ensure that fashion is approached with mindful consideration.

Craft and Community: Headquartered in Bangkok, Merandi sources silks from all over Thailand (please see each product page for province), and all products are crafted in Thailand’s Central region under a ISO 9001 certified quality management system. The Thai community’s artisanal skills are celebrated, the local economy is supported, and a low carbon footprint is generated throughout this short supply chain. All Merandi workers and employees are liable to the national labor legislation, regarding health, insurance, and wages. Every few months, suppliers are paid a visit to ensure worker rights are being met.

Materials: Our silk fabrics are made of organic fibers which are biodegradable, and 75% of our silk is colored with natural dyes. However, some of Merandi's color offerings are vivid. These cannot be achieved through using natural dyes, and alternatives are being explored.

Reducing Waste: Merandi operates on a made-to-order basis and a low-waste cutting technique is enforced. Reusable silk offcuts are transformed into silk sachets for a biodegradable dehumidifier made from soil; this is given to every bag insert. Then, all remaining offcuts are either recycled or donated. Merandi products are designed to be long-lasting, and 95% of the packaging is made from recycled and recyclable materials.

Slow Fashion: Merandi's high-quality materials ensure that all Merandi bag inserts will last a very long time, and help prolong the lifespan of the user’s handbag.

The road to becoming more ethical, responsible, and clean has been a highly uplifting journey for us. Looking ahead, we will be exploring more of the sustainable materials as we firmly believe that more collaborative initiatives are solutions to sustainable changes within these complex supply chains.
